Aunty Rayzor

Bisola Olungbenga was just nine years old when she started writing music. Encouraged by her piano playing mom, she would come home from school and compete with her sister, dreaming up verses and choruses for rewards of candy. Since then, Olungbenga has evolved into Aunty Rayzor, one of Nigeria's most vibrant emerging artists - a cross-genre innovator who blends hip-hop, Afrobeat, R&B and experimental sounds into an energetic portrait of contemporary Lagos. "Viral Wreckage" is Olungbenga's debut album, and follows the breakout success of her viral 2021 street anthem 'Kuku Corona'. This time she's assembled a lineup of some of the world's most exciting producers to help realize her vision: Congolese singer, guitarist and producer Titi Bakorta, young Ugandan producer III Gee, veteran Japanese innovator Scotch Rolex, Sao Paulo-based baile funk producer DJ Cris Fontedofunk, French beatmaker Debmaster, Nigerian singer and producer Slimcase, and Kenyan avant pop futurist Kabeaushe.

'Stuttrap' is the first blast of sound we hear, and Olungbenga quickly pilots us into her sonic universe, rapping assertively in Yoruba and English over Scotch Rolex's chrome-plated trap backdrop. lt's not far removed from the producer's work with Kenyan/Ugandan underground star MC Yallah, but Aunty Rayzor's incendiary, tongue-twisting raps coax listeners into a musical expression that's hard to define and only gets more expansive when we hit 'Doko'. Featuring Slimcase, who's collaborated with Nigerian superstars like Wizkid and Mr Eazi, this track melts together swinging West African rhythms with complex poetics from both Slimcase and Rayzor. Olungbenga slips into a different mode again on 'Bounce' - one of the album's most dancefloor-ready cuts - almost whispering over a corrosive neo-baile shuffle from DJ Cris Fontedofunk. Sao Paulo is responsible for some of the world's most effervescent dance music right now, and with Rayzor on vocals the result is predictably explosive, making connections between vital street music from two separate continents.

Recent *Nyege Nyege *signing Titi Bakorta brings Olungbenga into another different zone on 'Fall Back', linking to vintage Afrobeat with low-slung guitar riffs that perfectly compliment Rayzor's soaring vocals. Bakorta's voice is the perfect foil, centering the track in traditions that stretch back through Nigerian history without sounding nostalgic. Kabeaushe hits a similarly complimentary note on 'You not worthy of my love', twisting Rayzor's AutoTune-mangled rhymes into fresh-faced avant R&B that sits a few paces from the mainstream without losing its infectious sing-along quality. And that's the key to unravelling "Viral Wreckage" - Olungbenga is able to be eclectic but sharply focused, bringing in sounds from across a wide world of musical innovation without sacrificing her Nigerian identity. lt's an album that's almost effortlessly creative, and one that comes straight from the heart of an artist who's deserves a way larger platform. Skuff Barbie

2023 geht die Newcomerin mit der roten Pepero-ni als Markenzeichen mitsamt Debütalbum auf den Startblock: „Passiflora“ (365XX/PIAS Germany) ist mal süß, mal bitter und zeigt die Sängerin-Slash-Rapperin von all ihren Facetten. Damit liefert „Skuffi“ die perfekte Introduction in ihre Welt.

Rewind: Skuff Barbie kommt im nordrhein-westfälischen Münster als Tochter einer Familie aus dem afro-hispanischen Äquatorial-guinea zur Welt. Musik spielt in ihrer Familie über Generationen hinweg eine maßgebliche Rolle – ebenso wie das Wissen, dass ein Mensch seine Fähigkeiten stets für das Gute einsetzen sollte, und dafür manchmal kämpfen muss. „Skuffi“ fängt früh an, eigene Songs zu schreiben. Unterstützt wird sie dabei von ihrem Producer Boomboii, der sie seit Kindheitstagen begleitet und im gemeinsamen Studio in Münster am perfekten Soundbild für die junge Künstlerin feilt – einer einzigartigen Mischung aus HipHop, R&B, Dancehall und Pop. 2020 veröffentlichen die beiden mit ihrer Debütsingle „Rohdiamant“ eine self-fulfilling Prophecy: „Fakten werden jetzt genannt, nenn mich Rohdiamant“, eine Ansage, die keinen Widerspruch duldet und Skuff Barbie die Aufmerksamkeit des frisch gegründeten All Fe*male Rap Labels 365XX einbringt. Für die „Ghettoballerina seit dem Spielplatz“ geht die Arbeit von dort an erst richtig los: Die erste, gemeinsam mit ihrer neuen Labelheimat veröffentlichte Single „Meine Freunde, eure Feinde“ wird ein Achtungserfolg, mit „J.Lo“ schießt Team Skuffi im Sommer 2022 eine Dancefloor-Hymne hinterher. Parallel dazu arbeitet Skuff Barbie an ihrem Debütalbum.

Für die junge Künstlerin ist Musik „una casa de familia“ – entsprechend wundert es nicht, dass sie auch für ihr erstes Album mit dem Münsteraner Producer Boomboii arbeitet. Der Titel „Passiflora“ ist das perfekte Sinnbild für ihre Musik: Kaum eine Pflanze ist in so vielen kulturellen Kontexten symbolisch aufgeladen wie die Passionsblüte, steht sie doch für unbändige Schönheit und das Leben selbst, Wachstum und Entwicklung, aber auch Leid und Opferbereitschaft. Ebenso vielseitig und abwechslungsreich wie das namensgebende Gewächs zeigt sich Skuff Barbie auf dem Album von immer wieder neuen Seiten. Mit dickem „Löwenfell“ versetzt sie die Clubluft „On Fire“, setzt sich gemeinsam mit Leila Akinyi auf „Popular“ ihr eigenes Denkmal, verarbeitet auf „Toxic“, „Locker“ und „Wo du warst“ mit Wunso aber auch kleine und große Beziehungsdramen, um sich auf „W.I.S.S.“ für einen Moment selbst an den Pranger zu stellen. „Passiflora“ feiert das Leben – leuchtet aber auch in seine schattigsten Ecken.

„Ich habe keine Konkurrenz, die einzige Konkurrenz, die ich habe, bin ich selbst“, analysierte „Skuffi“ ihr Standing im popNRW-Talk. Mit klaren Ansagen, einem feurigen Temperament und einzigartigem Style ist Skuff Barbie der empowernde Gegenentwurf zu einer Norm-Barbie. Eine Künstlerin, deren Ära gerade erst begonnen hat. Und es geht einen Schritt vor und keinen zurück.
