Arsenal Mikebe
are a cutting edge percussion ensemble living on the outskirts of Kampala. Having developed a heavy body style of drumming interspersed with soul vocals & jungle infused trance, this is the industrial organic rhythm machine dressed in sexy Armani. Arsenal was founded by Jonathan Uliel Saldanha (HHY) and is comprised of percussionists Ssentongo Moses, Dratele Epiphany and Luyambi Vincent de Paul. Traditional drummers in their own right, their custom percussion system was created by Henry Segamwenge. The percussive system made partially of metal bells was built by craftsman Henry Segamweng and form the core of the ensemble sound, like an 808 cargo cult device, sounding both highly electronic & acoustic at the same time. The combined rhythmic density, hypnotic grooves and infectious voices are coaxed into a sonic discharge directed at the body.
"Arsenal Mikebe’s “Omuzimu” is an absolute adrenaline rush of polyrhythmic percussion that borders a little on anxiety-inducing. A multi-layered mix of bass kicks, cymbal clicks, and rim shots, the track leaves little room for anything other than the crests of a burbly synth that arrive in perfectly timed waves from what’s apparently a custom-built, reverse-engineered 808." - The Fader
Danae Palaka
is an Istanbul-based drummer and artist. Born in Athens to a musical family partially hailing from Istanbul, she relocated there to explore the city’s heritage and her own roots.
Her energetic and dense drumming style, influenced by Afrobeat and Anatolian rhythms, contemporary jazz and electronic music, blends grooves, polyrhythms and textural sounds. Her interest in researching alterna- tive qualities of the drum-kit generate concepts that aspire to redefine the essence of time and existence. Danae’s first solo album ‘Velox’ was released in October 2024 by A.F.O.M. INT. The album was developed by Palaka’s necessity to perform solo with a drum-kit and a sampler, therefore the open-ended limitation of drums and electronics became the creative force for the 8 tracks of ‘Velox’. The compositions utilise Danae’s musical influences with grooves inspired by contemporary jazz, rhythms of common heritage of Greeks and Turks and improvisation on the drum-kit mixed with melodies, arpeggios and electronic noises designed on analog and digital synths, in collaboration with producer Nikos Dervisis.
