VOICES OF THE COSMOS is a project created by two sound artists: Rafał Iwański (X-NAVI:ET) and Wojciech Zięba (ELECTRIC URANUS) and an astronomer Sebastian Soberski. VOICES OF THE COSMOS uses the original extraterrestial signals and sounds (pulsars, magentospheres of planets, Sun, aurora borealis, masers) captured with radio telescopes and other radio devices.
- Multimedia lecture with "sounds of cosmos" by Sebastian Soberski (astronomer): 30-40 min.
- Audiovisual concert by VOICES OF THE COSMOS: 45-50 min
"Unique project combining real space sounds and electronic into mindfucking ambient" (Keys and Chords)
"Whether they use pulsars, black holes, air pollution data, radio waves, DNA, or maps, these musicians certainly prove that music is everywhere." (Daily Bandcamp, Michal Wieczorek)
"In three quarters of an hour, they let nine songs pass through the space. They build their cosmos-infused avant-garde sound with ambient, abstract and psychedelic sounds. They also showcase harder beats a bit more often. All in all, it delivers another biologically and mind-blowing set. Think of a mishmash of Test Dept, Black Lung, S.E.T.I., Vidna Obmana, Mirt and Tangerine Dream. You won't get tired of this unearthly good album." (Jan Willem, De Subjectivisten)
Das Konzert wird unterstützt vom Verband für aktuelle Musik Hamburg und der Behörde für Kultur und Medien Hamburg.
VOICES OF THE COSMOS project combines the achievements of astronomy with electroacoustic music. The creators use original extraterrestrial signals (e.g. pulsars, magnetospheres of planets, the Sun, aurora borealis, masers, collisions of black holes) received by radio telescopes and other astronomical scientific instruments. They also use sonifications and archive recordings from space missions. Instrumental tracks integrated with processed rhythms and tones of the “space sounds” are created with electronic instruments, both digital and analogue, as well as various acoustic objects. The project has been presented many times in scientific institutions and at music festivals, in the form of audio-visual concerts, also in the version extended with astronomy lectures, workshops and sky observations. It is a unique initiative in Poland, which uses original space recordings, including ones from a 32-metre fully steerable single-dish radio telescope located at the Institute of Astronomy of the Nicolaus Copernicus University in Toruń.
Electronic music and radio astronomy are inventions, which originated in the first half of the 20th century. From the very beginning, both were permanently associated with technical progress and new technologies. The last studio album 'DE REVOLUTIONIBUS MMXXIII' was composed and recorded in the year of the 550th anniversary of the birth of Nicolaus Copernicus. Born in Toruń in 1473, Copernicus is one of the most eminent astronomers in the history of mankind. His work De revolutionibus orbium coelestium provided a major breakthrough in our understanding of the universe and sparked one of the most important scientific revolutions since antiquity, called the Copernican Revolution. Copernicus' entirely original and uncompromising contribution to astronomy has had an enormous impact on the development of modern sciences and the humanities. In its sound and musical dimension, VOICES OF THE COSMOS project refers to the Copernican revolution and its impact not only on the development of astronomy and modern science, but also on social transformations and philosophy - a breakthrough in thinking about the place of man in the Universe.
