Is it noise? Jazz? Free improv? Rock ‘n roll? Minimalism? Sound art? Punk? Mopcut third full-length is their most divergent, most genre liquefying statement yet, an album that creeps mischievously across the experimental scene at large, devouring its innovations and spitting away any lofty conceptual fat. With guest appearances from avant rap vanguard MC Dälek, Philly poet and activist Moor Mother and esteemed turntablist and composer Mariam Rezaei, ‘RYOK‘ (Heat Crimes, 2.5.25) oozes between various interconnected movements, constantly mutating and reanimating itself in the process.

LINE UP: Lukas Koenig: drums, Audrey Chen: voice, synth, Julien Desprez: electric guitar, Will Brooks A.K.A. MC Dälek: voice, electronics

Very special support: Hamburg's legendary analog effect act MARK BOOMBASTIK, who had his first concert with Dälek back in the days. Still, his teeth are strobe lights, his lips are millions of amps. His tongue is trillions of drum rolls!

"GELD ODER LEBEN" will deliver finest VINYL before-in-between-and-after.

Mopcut is an international trio formed by experimental vocalist and electronic musician Audrey Chen, Lukas Koenig, one of Europe’s most renowned percussionists, and French guitar-eccentric Julien Desprez. Their ability to improvise defies any genre limitations. Their energy driven, raging numbers oscillate between unleashed free expression and tamed, tight noise. Structured around ecstatic micro-explosions, they resemble an imaginary form of communication.

Their objective is a construct of noise and sounds that completely envelopes the listeners and has an equally as intensive impact on the ears as on the inner eye – that’s how Audrey Chen, Julien Desprez, and Lukas König describe their trio project Mopcut, which celebrated its premiere at donaufestival Krems (AUT) in 2018. Their improvisation abilities transcend all genre borders. Lukas König utilises his drums, synthesizer, and voice; Julien Desprez plays electric guitar; and Audrey Chen overlays the sounds from her analogue synthesizers with ecstatic extemporised vocals.

2025 and Jazz Em Agosto offers a special occasion for Mopcut to feature the live guests Moor Mother and MC Dälek, who are both part of Mopcut’s latest release ‘RYOK‘ (heat crimes, 2025) beyond other contributors like Moor Mother, Evicshen and Mariam Rezaei.

Ferociously creative and politically charged, Mopcut’s third album ‘RYOK‘ wranglers free improvisation, hip-hop, noise, post-punk and electronics into powerful newforms. Vocalist Audrey Chen, guitarist Julien Desprez and drummer Lukas Koenig are aided in their mission by guest vocalists Moor Mother and MC Dälek, with turntablist Mariam Rezaei and noise musician Evicshen contributing mind-bending remixes.

»Mopcut aims at minimalism or maximalism, depending. Improvisation, noise and electronic beats work well as backgrounds. (…) A tightly disciplined yet exuberant set of performances.« (THE WIRE)

Mark Boombastik
