Drone Machines is a bespoke audio gear company that celebrates and invites musicians and creators into this visceral and tactile world. The gear forges a connection with material and mechanical motion creating a human/machine interface for the artist to experience.
- "Unforgettable stagecraft, like a noise drama in which a man struggling to become a cyborg plays a cyborg struggling to remain a man." (PITCHFORK)
- “It's a thrill to watch this musical cyborg at work, as he literally fires on all cylinders and pulls levers like an executioner.” (NPR)
- "a dizzying, pulsating and pounding exposition of man's ultimatesonic collusion with machine." (REVOLVER)
Bong-Ra
BONG-RA became one of the pioneers of the extreme electronica Breakcore genre. Jason Kohnen’s (Bong-Ra) musical career started in 1988, as vocalist and bassist of underground Dutch crust/death/grindcore band BLUUURGH… releasing an EP and LP before founding the doom outfit CELESTIAL SEASON in 1991, one of the popular doom bands outside of the Peaceville 3 at that time. 1996 saw his break with metal music and new musical adventures flour- ish in electronic music.1998 saw the debut album release for BONG-RA following with a Peel Session in 2002. A long list of releases on prominent labels followed.
BONG-RA would be one of the first electronic artists to mix extreme metal with electronics. His 2007 ‘Grindkrusher’ EP was approved by Bolt Thrower, using samples from their War Master album. Apart from the BONG-RA project, Kohnen also co-founded THE KILIMANJARO DARKJAZZ ENSEMBLE and subsequently THE MOUNT FUJI DOOMJAZZ CORPORATION in 2006. A band which would release a handful of cult albums before disbanding in 2013.
Releasing several collaborations with VENETIAN SNARES and later IGORRR and performing at the most renowned festivals in the world such as Glastonbury, Lowlands, Dour and many more. Touring the continents ; Europe, North and South America and Japan on various occasions and sharing slots with artists like Aphex Twin, Ministry, Author & Punisher, Dillinger Escape Plan, Mastodon and The Prodigy.
After a hiatus of a few years, with musical experimentations into Doom, Electronica and Jazz with the releases ‘Antediluvian’ and ‘Meditations’ in 2018 and 2021, showcasing his albums at Road- burn with drummer Balasz Pandi (Merzbow), BONG-RA further expanded into his metal roots and will once again be relesing on Tartarus Records. BONG-RA will perform as a three piece live band, accompanied by two guitarists (Attila Kovacs and Botond Fogl).
"I guess you can see it as a circle/cycle completing itself. The BONG-RA project has always been deeply rooted in Metal, and was basically an electronic interpretation of Grindcore if you look at the polyrhythmic electronic beats. It definitely has the same energy, rawness and rebellion as Metal. My early roots were partly coming from Grindcore, this BONG-RA has more Industrial influences: SCORN, GODFLESH, GGFH, PITCH SHIFTER, FALL OF BECAUSE and so forth. The gradual shift with BONG-RA from electronics to Metal started around 2018 when the more Doom- jazz album "Antediluvian" was recorded and "Meditations" later received praising reviews for this style. With the forthcoming "Black Noise" album the shift has gone more towards the glitch me- chanical electronics. It’s the first album with this specific style, but I am pretty sure old and new BONG-RA listeners should enjoy the rawness.” Current album ‘Black Noise’ (Debemur Morti Productions, 02/2025).
