Every Indonesian kid learns that song. My ancestors were sailors.

Which makes it strange, and kind of perfect, that the Indonesian community in Hamburg is taking over an 80-meter ex-fishing ship to throw its loudest night of the year.

On September 5, the MS Stubnitz becomes a Pasar Ikan: an Indonesian fish market, the kind where the noise is the point. Dangdut on the main stage. Frying smell off seven food stalls. Party until 3am. Twelve hours from sunset to last call, a crossing that never leaves the harbor.

This is Jam Karet Festival x Boboho. Jam Karet has been building this for four years. Boboho - the diaspora karaoke collective that tore the roof off last year - is co-hosting this time. Together we’re showing a different side of Indonesia. Not the postcard. The living, sweaty, and singing one.

A port city. A fishing boat. A people who never stopped being sailors.
